Dispute – Appeal for Support

7 January 1881

Mexborough and Swinton Times January 7th 1881.

The Deadlock At Denaby Main Colliery.
Appeal For Support.

The miners lately thrown out of work at this colliery have issued the following appeal for support :-

” To The Miners of the District and The Public Generally ” – We the employees of The Denaby Main Colliery Company, beg to appeal to you for support under the following trying circumstances viz. :-

Through the unprecedented action of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company ( in refusing to convey our production into the market previous to all charges being paid, and the corresponding delay or partial stoppage of business ), our employers find themselves compelled to dispense with our services, as a result we find ourselves ( at this unfavourable season of the year ) unable to meet the requirements incidental to the maintenance of our wives and families.

We therefore, with confidence, venture to make the appeal for assistance to our coadjutors and the general public, and with respect subscribe ourselves.

The Workmen Of Denaby Main.
