Proposed Reduction of 10%

The miners of Denaby Main Colliery yesterday received an intimation from the manager of a proposed reduction of 10 % in their wages. The men were asked to agree to commence work at the reduced rate at once, without any formal notice.

The manager had a conference with the men in the pit-yard in the afternoon, but no decision was arrived at.

A largely attended meeting of the men was held in the Lodge room of the Mason´s Arms, Mexborough, to consider what course they should adopt in reference to the proposed reductions.

The meeting was of a private nature, but we believe that the men would be prepared to submit to a reduction of about 5 %.

It was amicably agreed.

Mechanics Quit. – Dispute over Extra Hours

The mechanics employed at Denaby Main Colliery were recently informed that they would be required to work extra hours or leave their employment.

Not being disposed to subject themselves to any increase of working hours the whole of the men have accepted their notices and left the employment of the company.
