Starving Conisbrough Soldier
Private T Shakespeare.
The photograph is of Private C Shakespeare, who is now a prisoner of war in Germany.
Shakespeare was a reservist in the second battalion of the Sherwood Foresters, of the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, and was called upon at the commencement of the war.
In a letter to Mrs Wright of Sheffield Road, Conisbrough, he says:
“I did not receive the parcel you sent me, but that does not matter now, as I am a prisoner in Hamlyn of Wesen, province of Hanover, Germany… I am not so well, but I shall have to make the best of it.
I should be all right if I had enough to eat, but we are getting very little, just enough to keep us alive.”
