DENABY’S BIG SCORING GAME
Denaby United 5, Spalding United 3

Denaby United had to fight hard to keep a grip of this match and so gain their fourth win of the season at Tickhill Square on Saturday.

Leading 2-0 at half time, Denaby lost their lead as Spalding hit back early in the second half; regained it only to lose it again; but hit back to make sure of two well deserved points.

The first 40 minutes of the match might just as well not have been played, so ineffective was the showing by both sides – to a greater extent that of Spalding, who didn’t produce one worthwhile shot in the first 20 minutes.

So Denaby just deserved their lead after newly-signed centre-forward McKAY, formerly with Yorkshire Leaguers Hallam, calmly tapped a high centre past price with two minutes of the half to go. Two minutes later, winger David Whittaker thankfully broke the boring pattern of goalmouth scrambles that had characterised the match so far, zig-zagging deep into Spalding territory after which HAYDEN made it 2-0.

In the second half Denaby had their backs to the wall in the opening minutes as with Spalding trying to pull themselves back into the game, inside-right ARNWELL twice slipped the grip of a confused home defence to bring the scores level with 60 minutes gone.

IN LEAD AGAIN

A sigh of relief went up ten minutes later as HAYDEN made up for an unimpressive performance, eluding a Warrington tackle, slipping past the diving Price, and nudging Denaby into the lead again.

The advantage lasted just three minutes and after a Forster infringement, FLACK stroked the ball into the top of the net from the penalty spot.

All things being equal that’s how it should have stayed, 3-3, but some things are more equal than others, as Trevor WHITTAKER proved in the 78th and 80th minutes with two pretty similar close range goals. Spalding finally collapsed.

Said Trevor afterwards: “I was determined to make up for missing a ‘sitter’ earlier.”
