Lucky Escapes in Dearne Week-end Accident

FIRE BRIGADES from Mexborough, Barnsley and If Goldthorpe, as well as ambulances answered emergency calls on Sunday afternoon when an Army lorry carrying 18 cadets overturned in Highgate Lane, between Highgate and Bolton-on-Dearne.

Ten of the boys were taken to Mexborough Montagu Hospital for treatment, but only one was detained. He was Derek Benfold (13), of Daylands Avenue, Conisbrough.

On Way to Wath

The lorry had collected boys in the Conisbrough and Denaby area and had then picked up more in Goldthorpe . They were members of the 7th Battalion York and Lancaster Army Cadets and were being taken to the Drill Hall at Wath-on -Dearne in connection with training routine.

As the vehicle was travelling down Highgate Lane in the direction, of Bolton-on-Dearne it overturned.  The cadets were severely shaken, and, in the first confusion of the crash callswere sent out to local 4 Fire Brigades.

Ambulances from Barnsley, Mexborough and Goldthorpe reached the scene promptly but their services were not needed.

Ten of the cadets were taken by ambulance to Mexborough Montagu Hospital. Nine were sent home after treatment for minor bruises and abrasions.

Slightly Injured

These were: Lewis Knight (13), Melbourne Ave, Thurnscoe; Trevor Sawyer (14), George Street, Thurnscoe; Harold Wilkinson (13), Halifax Avenue, Conisbrough; Kenneth Gill (14), Doncaster Road, Denaby; Malcolm Martin (13), Church St, Denaby; Brian Callan (15), Pangbourne Rd, Thurnscoe; Alan Morton (14), Burcroft Road, Conisbrough; Peter O’Rourke (14), Old Road, Conisbrough; and John Rose (15), Thrybergh Terrace, Denaby.

Derek Benfold, after treatment at Montagu Hospital was later transferred to the Fulwood annexe, Sheffield.

The driver of the lorry, which was a conventional Army truck with canvas top, was Herbert Barnett, of Morton Road, Mexborough. He was uninjured
