Denaby Draw at Wath

Wath Athletic 1 Denaby United 1

The return Association League match between Denaby United and Wath Athletic was played on Saturday at the Wath ground. The committee had selected the fixture as a benefit match for Rowley Hawcroft, one of the old Wath players, who has done good service for the club for many years.

It was thought the meeting of the neighbouring clubs would have had the effect of producing a good gate, but there was a miserable attendance, notwithstanding the weather was beautifully fine. It was stated, however, that 1000 tickets and been sent out, and it is to be hoped that the old player will reap a substantial benefit.

Play was begun at 3:10, Wath having won the toss and kicked from the Pavilion end. The opening stages were of an even character, but at the end of 10 minutes, the visitors obtained a lead with a rather fluky goal. The Wath keeper had saved a shot, and the Wath players were appealing for offside, when Goodwin, ever on the alert, rushed up and netted the ball. The appeal was disregarded and consequently the point was considered a good one.

After changing ends the Wath men were on the ball like cats. Rothery got possession and put in one of his well-known centres, but the attack was checked. Then the Wath forwards, came again, and within 3 minutes Davis
headed in. Hardy run out to save, but missed the ball, and four Wath men to make sure of a good thing followed it into the net.
