Peploe Takes Hat Trick in His Second Over

Cortonwood fast bowler, Eric Peploe, took a hat trick in his second over against Denaby in a Yorkshire Council match at Brampton, and at one stage had taken four wickets for only two runs. He finished with four for 42.

This was after Cortonwood had declared at 167 for five when rain temporarily stopped play. With four men back in the pavilion and only eight runs on the board, Denaby “put up the shutters” and batted overs out to make 100 for five. Main contribution came from N. Oakley, who carried his bat for 45 – this after being dropped before he opened his scoring. McDonald scored 13 and R. Cory 21 not out. Denaby’s other wicket fell to Geoff Biram at a cost of five runs, and three other bowlers were unsuccessful.

Cortonwood opener Clive Baxter was out when he had made only four, but then Brian Exley (34) and Roy Schofield (25) stayed long enough to put on 51 for the next wicket. Father and son Henry and David Walters also put up a grand partnerhip, scoring 49 and 38 not out respectively. Wickets fell to N. Pearson (two for 35), Oakley (one for 13) R. Dobbs (one for 38) and T. Hydes (one for 61).
