Allotments Society

There appear to have been sarcastic remarks passed at the annual meeting of the Conisborough allotment Society, and when one investigates the “grouses” one rather feels that the long-suffering allotment holders have some cause for their attitude.

In August, the members stated, the Council promised gates, locks and keys and notice boards. These have yet to come. The new site which was to have been staked out at the bottom of Ivanhoe road is now being used as a public footpath and a playground.

Perhaps the most annoying thing these workers have to contend with is the tipping of refuse on the path. They say that they were asked to dig out 9 inches of soil to save expense, and the main path would be made with dry ash. One member thought that they ought to get the Minister of Health to look at it.

This Society has only been in operation for six months, but it seems to have been “up against it” right from its inauguration. It was formed as a protective measure when allotments had to be given up for houses which have not been commended yet.

There are about 50 members but these want the backing of all allotment holders. They are far from being confirmed grumblers. They want progress, and if they can get enough members they want to revive the Conisborough show.

The secretary is Mr H Shacklock 77 Gardens Lane.
