Worksop Fail Dismally and Denaby Lift The Cup

Worksop Town 2, Denaby United 4

Once again Denaby United lifted the cup. Last season they were runner ups in the same competition, but I think this was the first time Eddie Fleetwood, Denaby’s captain, had the honour of being presented with the trophy. Approximately, Denaby’s loss in the competition is estimated at about £100.

Denaby cannot be denied of their victory, for they were easily the best team. With the exception of about 10 minutes in the opening stages, and less than that in the in the second half, Worksop never had a “look in.”

Seeing that Worksop, who had defeated Frickly in the semi-final, hold a prominent position in the Yorkshire League, they were fully expected to put up a better show than they did. They did not play with the same determination that has carried them into such prominence, their forwards failing when within range and their halfbacks been unable to deal with the ever moving Denaby frontline.

The only Worksop forward to show any dash was Bowen. They had a blow before the game started when it was known that there regular outside left Taylor was unable to play, due to an injured right ankle having failed to yield to treatment. Flowers, in the home goal, had more work to do than Earnshaw had but what he did he did well and could not be blamed for any of their shots that passed him. He had a pair of backs in Fish and Radford who were always troubled when danger threatened. Whilcock, Shepherd and Staniland were ever on the run, and the two wing halves were unable to deal with Fearnley and Guest. Whilcock was mainly responsible for Denaby’s first goal being scored. The forwards came in flashes; they had their chances but failed to take them. Once Marklew had a glorious chance to score early in the game but he shot weakly into the hands of Earnshaw.

Good Rearrangement.

On the whole Denaby’s rearranged team did well. Happs and Wright were ineligible owing to them having played with Mexborough this season. Leek returned to the side to partner Uren, but was not as useful as Happs, Beadman and Sykes were again prominent, but Walker appeared to be unable to stand the pace. The entire forward line was as one, with Guest being the most outstanding player in the field. He was the live wire of the attack.

The “gate” at the start was much bigger than there will has been at Denaby in any game this season.

From the start Denaby made an early attack. Guest and Fearnley put in some good work but Machin failed to put on finishing touches. Transferring play to the other end, Marklew had a great chance but after drawing the defence he shot into Earnshaw’s hand from close range. Cocker sent in a good shot only to see Uren bringing his head into action. Bowen and Lowe, in a combined movement, threatened danger to the Denaby goal. They transferred the ball over to the left to Hubbard who quickly returned it to give Marklew another chance, and again he shot into the hands of Earnshaw. Lowe later struck the post and Earnshaw brought off a great save from Cocker.

After this Worksop were out of the picture. Denaby regained their superiority when Sykes sent the ball out to Guest, who took the ball up the field to send in a hard shop which Flower luckily saved. Inspired by this after 30 minutes their efforts were rewarded. Barks, after drawing Fish put forward a neat pass for Machin to fasten onto it and score. For a foul on Fearnley Denaby were awarded a freekick. This was taken by Beadman, who sent the ball over to Guest, who stood uncovered and sent it home with a fast rising shot that beat Flower all the way. Denaby pegged away right to the interval, but no further goals were scored

Not Downhearted.

With two goals down Worksop were not downhearted. Their play on resuming revealed improvement, but still it was disappointing. They forced a corner. Whilcock dropped the ball into the Denaby goalmouth and there was some relief when Earnshaw eventually cleared the danger. Marklew made a good run down the middle and again Earnshaw dealt with the shot.

However, Denaby took up the play and Sykes fed his forwards well. Flower had to be on the alert in dealing with shots from Fearnley. Machin and Guest. Displaying another burst of speed Guest made no mistake with a left foot drive to register Denaby’s third goal. Much to the surprise of Denaby, Hubbard reduce the arrears. There was no holding Denaby after this, and they attacked repeatedly, then Machin scored their fourth goal, which appeared to put the issue beyond doubt. The Denaby eased up and in the closing stages Bowen got Worksop second goal.

The cup was presented to Eddie Fleetwood by Mr David Proctor, chairman and treasurer of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Football Association, who was accompanied by Mr H. Greenwood, secretary of the Association.

The number of spectators who watched the match was 3,496, while the gate receipts amounted to £82 10s 3d
