Severe Blow to Denaby

Kiveton Park 1 Denaby United 0

What price promotion now? Denaby United’s chance of Yorkshire League First Division football next season took a nasty knock on Saturday when they went down 1-0 at Kiveton.

A single penalty goal by Skelton after 60 minutes settled the issue in a pretty unsatisfactory way for the point of view of Denaby, who could quite easily have made sure of at least one point, maybe two.

Keeper Metcalfe twice over the Kiveton goal in the closely fought first half. He was well placed to punch Caunt’s header over the bar after neat Hall – Smith move had caught the home defence flat-footed. And five minutes before half time he was lucky to get his legs in the way of a Smith drive.

But that wasn’t to say the game was one-sided. Kiveton looked a dangerous side at times, although their efforts were sparked by some of the vigourous tackling. Their best first half chances came from a perfect Skelton cross which was headed just over the bar by Crutchley.

Disappointing

There were few clear-cut chances created by either side in a shoddy second half. Kiveton were just the better side, spurred on by the penalty which they were lucky to have awarded against Williams after a mildly obstructive tackle. It was especially disappointing that while Denaby gained two fine wins in the past fortnight in sleep mode, they could not cash in on the near-perfect condition of the Kiveton pitch which does the club great credit.
