He immediately joined up, and served in the Army from 1914 to 1919. On the Somme he gained the military medal, and at Messines he was awarded the Croix De Guerre. He was also mentioned in dispatches. After the Caparetto disaster he went to Italy, fought on the Piave, and on the Asiago. From Italy he came home for commissioned rank and was undergoing training at the cadet centre at Ripon when the war ended and he finished with the rank of sergeant major.
Mr Oldfield has served for many years on the Roman Terrace and that Adwick Hospital Committee and also on the board of management of Mexborough hospital. Returning thanks for his election of Wednesday, Mr Oldfield said that the council could make his time a happy one if they carried on the business in a reasonable way. He would endeavour to reciprocate.
Mr R. H. Shepard, retiring chairman, said that it had been a pleasure to occupy the chair, and he was grateful for the generous support of councillors and staff. It had been a wonderful year for Conisborough and Denaby there. The outstanding events where the silver jubilee and the proclaimation of the new King.
Mr R. J. Troughton, who was elected vice-chairman, said that he hoped that this year there would be an even finer spirit in the council than in the past. A lot of the interjections that had been made in debate had been in a friendly spirit.
