Denaby United
The outlook for the Denaby United Football Club during the coming season is considered to be exceedingly rosy, for, notwithstanding several faces will be missed, there is quite a rush of new talent, of which great things are expected.
Lavery, practically the leading the attack, and the player who led the team to victory more than once during last successful season, went to Leeds City before the end of the season. Now Arnold, the clever half back, has transferred his affections to Chesterfield, and only goes to Mexborough Town.
The usual competitions with the exception of the Wharncliffe Cup, have be entered. The first team will defend its title as holders of the Sheffield Challenge cup, and in the English Cup,in which they are drawn with Doncaster Rovers or Morley at Denaby, and they expect to do well.
The Second team have entered the Association League, a competition in which they did so excellently last winter.
A strong team has been got together; nearly all the old players have been retained. Hancock, goalkeeper, with an addition in Hornsby, a local player; Lawley, the left back again captains the side, and Westwood, after a season with Mexborough and Rotherham County, also reappears .Welch is again found in the line. Other players are:
Hawcroft (Conisborough St Peter’s), Price (Woodhouse), Nimrod, Tomkins, S Jones (Walsall), Verity (Bullswell), Doherty, Hopkinson (Kent Road mission) Wildman (Gresley) and McGlennis (Hebburn Argyle).
The team will appear in new colours, viz. olive green jerseys and white knickers.
No very striking alterations have been effected on the ground and the poor, despised members of the Press will, for another season, have to put up with the alleged accommodation. Next season it is proposed to effect a big improvement by way of dressing rooms etc, erected on the ground. A practice match will be held on Saturday.
