The Forbidding of the Banns at Conisbro
Business Before Pleasure.
It will be remembered that a Sunday or two ago, when the banns of a couple were published at Conisbro’ Church, a young lady rose and forbade them, the reason subsequently assigned being that the proposed bridegroom had offered marriage to her.
The couple for whom the banns were published were married at Conisbro’ on Friday. It was arranged that the wedding (between ex-policeman Bonnett and the girl Ogley) should take place at noon. No one however, put in an appearance at church, and the bridegroom was sought for an explanation. He was found busy at harvest work, and on being spoken to, intimated that business should always go before pleasure.
On arriving at church it was found that Mr. Wilson, who is officiating in the vicar’s absence, had left, being tired of waiting. He returned, however, and performed the ceremony. The bridegroom wore the clothes he had walked from the field in.
The church was full of people, and after the ceremony there was a little sod throwing, but this was soon checked by the police.
