Tall Order
Bridge Demolition

Locomotives attached by steel cable to the girders were used to assist in the demolition of this high bridge near Conisborough over the main Sheffield-Doncaster L.N.E. railway line.

The material, seen falling in the picture, was pulled on to the permanent way and subsequently broken up before removal. Sleepers may be seen across the line to protect the rails.

The bridge, which has been up since 1850 (when the line was laid) and which was formerly used as an occupation bridge for quarry workers, has now become obsolete and will not be replaced.
