50 Years as a Chorister

Mr James Thompson of 128 Doncaster Road, Denaby Main has just completed 50 years service as a chorister.

He joined the church choir as a probationer at the age of eight. At that time services were held in St Chad’s (lately demolished) and were conducted by the curate’s from Mexborough.

In the afternoon the choir rendered service at Old Denaby. Later they came to the Rossington Street School (now burnt down) and when the Large Hall was built in 1892 a chancel was attached and services were held by the first vicar of Denaby Main, the Rev Joseph Brooks.

In 1901 the foundation stone was laid for the present parish church. Throughout all these phases of church life in Denaby Main Mr Thompson sang as man and boy in the choir and is still very proud to carry on. The choir men intended to recognise the service by a presentation the near future
