Denaby Reservist Killed
His Face to the Foe
Mrs Lowe, the wife of one army reservist worked at Denaby Main Colliery for being called to rejoin the second Royal Dublin Fusiliers, and received the following intimation of the death of her husband, from the acting adjutant:
Frere, Natal, 21/12/99
Mrs Lowe
I deeply regret to have to announce to you the death of your husband, Corporal Lowe, at the battle of Colenso, on Friday, 15 December 1899.
He fell, with many of the brave comrades, like a good soldier, with his face to the foe, bravely maintaining, with the sacrifice of his life, the reputation of his regiment.
He was buried on the field of battle.
I beg to tender you my very deep sympathy with you in your sorrow.
