Encouraging Start to New Season by Denaby

Newly Constructed Team Gain First Point at the Seaside

DENABY looked the fresher side after their Midland League meeting with Scarborough at Scarborough on Saturday. Both sides scored a goal before half time and hung on until the end in a match which was something of a hit and miss affair.

Scarborough 1. Denaby United 1

Among the 3,000 spectators was Liverpool M.P. Mrs. Bessie Braddock, who is on holiday in the town.

With the match three minutes old Scarborough had the ball in the visitors net from a free kick, but the award for a foul was an indirect free kick and Whittle’s shot went in Linn assisted.

Denaby challenged soon afterwards but right winger Smith headed wide with a snap dive at a centre from Jenkins on the other wing. Another free kick for Scarborough, which Whittle chipped towards the goal, spun and bounced, and nearly beat Oslear.

Denaby were first to score in the 30th minute. A Scarborough defender dallied facing his own goal, then pushed the ball out, and Smith was there to bang it home.

The lead was shortlived for when’ Scarborough’s Fowler sent a fine corner kick swerving into the middle of a pack of players DAVIE scored, just inside the post.

Towards the end of the half Den-aby were more in the picture. Their defence line was sound, and their attackers a tricky bunch.

Scarborough’s goalkeeper Marshall had to jump to bring off a great one-handed save when Denaby attacked, Shaw angling in a good shot at goal. Scarborough missed when unbalanced Moore shot one wide of the Denaby upright and left back Heaton had to head out for a corner in another attack on Denaby’s goal. Before the end, Scarborough were looking the more tired team, but there was no further score.
