Denaby Utd – Denaby 1  Leeds United Reserves 1 – Lucky to Resue Point

October 1921

Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 10 January 1921

Mexboro’s Weak Shooting.

Mexborough Town 0  Grimsby Town Reserves 0

There was no excuse for Mexborough dropping a home point on Saturday. The result was a draw, 0-0. The weakness of their shooting almost defies description. Throughout the game they had Grimsby completely in hand, and their general superiority cannot be overestimated.

The most flagrant misses were by Reed, who, in addition to failing to score from half-a-dozen splendid openings, was unsuccessful with a penalty kick . Waite was another offender as regards shooting, and Foxall, though he once get the ball through but was penalised for impeding, was also disappointing.

The Mexborough defence played a very sound game. The former Denaby man, Hodgkins, gave a very fine exhibition, and it must have been extremely galling to him to see his many perfect centres go a-begging.

Denaby United 1  Leeds United Reserves 1

Denaby were lucky to rescue a point out of their home match with Leeds United ‘Reserves. A goal behind for about sixty minutes, and at times almost outplayed, yet they managed to equalise points.

Again, the pitch was two or three inches deep in mud, and this factor greatly affected the play of both teams. Leeds were, on the whole, slightly the better team, and but for the really splendid display Shepherd in the home goal they would have been two or three goals up.

Best, the Leeds outside left, put his side ahead after about half an hour’s play, and Grey equalised with a good solo effort two minutes from time.
