Station Road Girl’s “Solo” Feats

The fourth annual gala of the Conisborough and Denaby schools, held in the Conisborough Baths, on Saturday, attracted a record crowd. The silver shield presented by the local true tree of the Welfare Fund and the Denaby Horticultural Society, and held for the all two seasons by St. Albans, was won by Middle School.

The points obtained by the schools were:

Middle School, 69.
St. Alban’s, 53.
Balby Street, 37.
Station Road, 37.
Rossington Street, 15.
Morley Place, 6.

The Judges were: Mire A. Y. Maclusky (Doncaster) and Mr. A. Butler (Mexborough). Mr. W. Linstead, the baths manager was starter and Mr. G. Smith the M.C. During the Interval four members of the Conisborough Swimming Club gave an exhibition of fancy diving and swimming. Members of the S.J.A.B. anal Nursing Division were in attendance. Margaret Ellis, of School Terrace, Conisborough, slipped on the bath side and received a nasty cut on the forehead.

The events were evenly contested. A feature was the meritorious display of Elsie Hayes (Station Road), who won all her heats and finals, was successful in the plunging and dying, and scored more than half the points obtained by her school.

The presentation of the shield and prises was made at the Middle School on Monday evening by Mr. H. Gomersall, chairman of the District Education Sub-committee, who congratulated the winners and said if he had his way swimming would be part of every school curriculum.

Miss L. Ward, head teacher, presided over the gathering. The prize-winning choir of the school treated the audience to some excellent singing of part songs and glees.
