19 – Mr B.H. Pickering appointed agent, Denaby and Cadeby Collieries.

Charles Wright (24), miner, Denaby, fatally shot in clash between gamekeeper and poachers in Denaby Thick; the gamekeeper, Claude Christian (25), acquitted of manslaughter.

16 – Mr S.A. Hinchcliffe, formerly of Wombwell, won £15,000 in Irish sweepstake.

20 – First aid post opened at Hickleton.

21 – 300 Mineworkers summoned at Barnsley by the Houghton Main Colliery Company for absenting themselves without leave.

Rossington Street school, Denaby, destroyed by fire.

25 – Record “gate” of £107 for Montagu football cup final at Wath.

2 – Mr George Goodacre, standing for first time, topped all in Mexborough Council election with record vote this.

5 – Wath U.D.C. decided to open baths on Sundays.

7 – Mexborough Evening Institute Choral Society gave “Faust” at inaugural concert.

8 – Mr G.F. Carter, surveyor for 36 years, made birthday gift of presidential chair Mexborough U.D.C.

19 – Mr J.E. Hall presented chain of office to Wombwell U.D.C.

23 – Presentation to Mr. H.P. Bower, engineer, Kilnhurst Colliery, on departure to Coventry

May

3 – Denaby War Heroes Fund wound up with presentations to six local men who gained decoration.

16 – Rock House acquired by Swinton U.D.C. and grounds added as gift by Misses Harrop.

21 – South Yorkshire once more inundated following heavy rain: Owen Mapes (14), pony driver, Wath, drowned.
