A Conanby “Star”

Captain Who Carried Them Through.

Conanby’s Montagu Cup tie with Roman Terrace was won in the face of heavy odds, largely through the great display of Danford, the captain of the Conanby team, who gave as fine an exhibition of centre-half play as has been seen on local junior grounds this season.

He was not to turn out till the last minute, owing to injuries in his team’s previous match, which required sticking plaster; but the side was so weakened by other injuries that he decided to take the risk.

The result was that Conanby won a surprising and handsome victory with a team that on paper looked as thoroughly unrepresentative as it well could. Danford was the main cause of the success.

Danford is only 20 years old and his promise is such that clubs of higher class will soon have their eyes on him. He stands 5ft. 10, and weighs 11 st. He has turned out in Denaby’s Sheffield Association League side on four occasions this season, but he has returned to his own club for their cup and league engagements.

This is only his second season of serious football. He is extremely clever with feet and head, has a judgment ripened beyond his years, and as captain of the side shows the qualities of real leadership too. There appears to be a career in football for this young man.
