A Cross To Her Memory

A cross made by a 22 years old silversmith has been dedicated at Conisbrough Methodist Church in memory at Mrs. Annie Troughton, wife of the Rev. R. J. Troughton (at one time a member of Conisbrough Urban Council). The Rev. and Mrs. Troughton spent several years in Canada. Mrs. Troughton is buried at Conisbrough: her widower now lives in Barnsley.

Mr. P. Randall, 78, Northcliffe Road, Conisbrough, a General Crafts and Art teacher at Dinnington High School, spent three months on making the cross, which stands 26 inches high and is 12 inches wide. It was dedicated by the Rev. D. H. MacDonald.

Mr. Randall, who was formerly at Rotherham School of Art and Loughborough College, holds a National Diploma in Design. He told the ‘South Yorkshire Times,’ ‘Mr. Troughton proposed the idea. I had already thought about something similar in memory of my grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Randall, and a silver vase which I made about a year ago was dedicated to them at the same time as the cross.’

The memorial is fashioned in silver plated copper. It is mounted on a base of Agba – a South American or African Wood. The vase is of gilded metal, also silver plated.
