A Denaby Celebrity Sent To Prison
Doncaster West Riding Police Court, on Saturday. Thomas Gough, collier, New Conisbro’, was summoned for refusing to quit the Eagle and Child Inn, Conisbro’, and also for assaulting the landlord, Charles Raynor.
Defendant went into the tap room and ordered two glasses of beer. These were supplied but only one was paid for. Defendant repeated the order, and put down 4d. The landlord’s son picked up the money and took away one of the glasses of beer, saying that defendant had not paid for it and taking away would make things straight.
Defendant became abusive, and struck complainant’s son. Complainant remonstrated with him, and defendant hit him heavily on the mouth with his fist. He refused to leave the place, and police had to eject him.
Defendant had been previously convicted for assault, and was now sent to gaol for two months with hard labour, for the assault, and fined 20s and costs for refusing to quit.
