A Denaby Claim

At the Doncaster County Court on Wednesday, a claim was brought by Thomas Gough, shopkeeper, of Denaby, against James Wilks, miner, also of Denaby to recover £4, a balance of money lent, and goods supplied.

Mr Baddeley appeared for the plaintiff.

Mary Ann Gough stated that £2 was to borrow money, and the rest of the claim was for goods bought at the Co-operative Stores in her name and supplied by her to the defendant.

She was entitled to a dividend of five shillings in the pound (25%), and she allowed the defendant three shillings in the pound of this, for which she had given credit.

The defendant’s wife made a statement according to the plaintiff of having kept her “divvy” (dividend) out of a cheque and claimed that there was 11 shillings owed to her (defendant).

His Honour confessed himself unable to understand defendant’s claim, gave judgement for plaintiff holding payment at the rate of 2/-per week.
