A Denaby Miner’s Whiskey
John McGough, a little man with a stentorian voice, was explained that he was thrown out of work at Denaby Main, where the strike was, created roars of laughter in Wigan Police Court on Friday, when he was brought before the Justices on a charge of being drunk and riotous.
McGough at the outset exclaim, “I want to know who has taken that bottle of whiskey out of my pocket.” (Laughter.)
The Presiding Magistrate: “Shouting in that way won’t help you.”
McGough: But I want to know. (Laughter.)
A Constable: Shut up.
McGough: I am shutting up. (Loud laughter.)
The Presiding Magistrate: You will have to pay a fine of 10 shillings and costs, or go to prison for one month.
McGough: I’ll go to prison. Can I take that bottle of whiskey with me? (Loud laughter.)
The prisoner was unceremoniously removed below.
