“A Gambling School” At Mexboro’.

At the West Riding Court, on Saturday, at Doncaster, Joseph Webster, William Turner. John Dalton, Joseph Peters, Walter Rogers. Joseph Soar, Frederick Burgoyne, John Walton, William Wilson. Peter Winstanley, all New Conisbro’; Patrick M’Dermott, Dan Peplow, John Shelton. Samuel Davis, Michael Dalton, of Dcnaby; Thomas Leak, Thomas Trout, John McClintock and J- Hart, of Mexboro’. and J. Taylor, of Snape Hill, were all summoned for gaming with coins at Mexborough on March 6.

Robert Addy, Joseph Eyre, John Adshead and R. Dagnall, of Mexborough, were similarly summoned on 12th March.

Police constable Jarvis said he was on duty at Mexhoro’ near what is known as the Low Locke and saw all the defendants gambling.

Inspector Ambler said he watched the men with a pair of field glasses.

Sergeant Brown corroborated.

Soar denied that he was ’‘with the gambling school;” he had only gone out for a walk. The police said they had no doubt as to Soar being with the rest of the man.

All the men were found guilty.

Those who appeared in answer to the summons were fined 10s, including costs, and the absentees were mulcted in 12s. 6d.
