A Narrow Escape

At the West Riding Police Court on Saturday, John Marlborough, a glass blower, of Conisbro’, was charged with being drunk at Mexbro’.

The day before the defendant was met by Inspector Beevers. He was then partially intoxicated, and his clothes were wet through. From inquiries Beevers made he came to the conclusion that the man had been in the canal. Marlborough said that he had got drunk at Conisbro’, and to sober himself had taken a walk on the canal side, and that was all he knew.

Beevers added that the defendant was so benumbed that he could scarcely sit, stand, or walk. He removed him to the station house, where, having stripped him of his wet clothes, he wrapped him in blankets. The man, who now seemed to know very little about it, was fined 14s., including costs.
