A Novel Engine
Engine No. 10.000 emerging from Conisborough Tunnel on its way to the Locomotive Exhibition at the Sheffield Victoria Station. This locomotive represents an entire departure from orthodox design, being fitted with a water-tube boiler instead of the usual smoke-tube type.
Owing to the fact that the boiler is built to the maximum permissible dimensions, it is not possible to fit an ordinary chimney, and the contour of the front is so arranged that the smoke is thrown upward, clear of the driver’s line of sight. The trailing end is also of unusual design, being carried on two separate radial axles.
The engine and tender are over 75 feet in length, and weigh 106 tons.
