Matt. Taylor, so often referred to as Denaby United’s veteran full-back, is not so much a veteran in age as in football experience. He began playing at the age of 15 and has had 20 years in the game. Starting with Swinton P.M. in the Mexboro’ Sunday School League he joined Mexboro’ Rovers, a Chapeltown League side, a couple of seasons Liter.
It was at the age of 18, after he had been with the Rovers for one season, that he was picked up by Sheffield United and spent a season playing with their reserve side, also taking part in a number of charity matches. It was in one of these that he played against Everton. when George Uttley had to drop out of the side owing to injury. Leaving Sheffield United, Taylor came to Mexboro’ and figured in their Midland League side for three seasons. It was during this period that be was converted into a full-back. His usual position had been left half-back but when one of Mexboro’s regular backs broke his collar bone Matt. was tried in the position and made good in it.
His next club was Denaby with whom he stayed for five years only to return to Mexboro’ for part of season before the end of which he was back at Tickhill Square. He has remained will Denaby ever since, though in the meanwhile he has had offers to go to Doncaster and Loughboro’. He has given some splendid service to his present club and so far shows no signs of losing his form. His experience and his shrewd defensive capabilities have been valuable assets to Denaby in more than one stirring game, and he has figured in most of the club’s important games in the last ten years or so, including the F.A. Cup ties with Lincoln, Kettering, and Carlisle.
He has helped Denaby to win the Mexboro’ Challenge Cup twice and the Sheffield Senior Cup. Reliable both on and off the field, Matt. is deservedly popular with all those whom he comes into contact at Tickhill Square.
