A Traction Engine Drivers Difficulties

Samuel Whitfield, traction engine owner, Conisborough, was charged with travelling a locomotive on the highway at Adwick on Dearne, on January 16th, there not being three men in charge of the same.

Sergeant Topham stated that on Tuesday, 16th inn, he met the defendant at Adwick on Dearne. He was driving a traction engine which was travelling towards Adwick. There was a man walking in front, but no one behind. Witness asked him why he was travelling an engine en the road with only two men, and be said his man was behind in the trap. Witness called his attention to the fact that them was no one behind as stated, and while they were talking defendant’s man came up with the horse and trap.

Witness told the defendant this would not do, and said he should report the case.

Defendant, who not appear, was fined 10s. and costs.
