A Trivial Denaby Case
Mary Elizabeth Howell, married woman, of Denaby, was summoned by George Wm. Riley, a boy, aged 12 years, for assault, on the 6th July.
The complainant’s story was to the effect that on the date in question he was near Tickhill Street, about five o’clock in the afternoon, when the defendant came up to him, knocked him down, and kicked him. At the time he was fighting another boy. She called him a “blackleg.”
Thomas Whittlestone, a miner, and a number of other witnesses, gave evidence as to the assault.
The defendant was sworn, and she said it was an everyday occurrence for boys to commence making a noise near to the houses, and on the date in question Riley and another boy was fighting. She separated them, and told Riley to go off home. He was very impudent, but she did not do anything to him, but half an hour later he returned and commenced to throw stones. She went out to him, but did not touch him. He was running away when he fell down.
The Bench dismissed the case.
