A Violent Customer
John Cox, labourer, of Denaby, was summoned for refusing to quit and for wilful damage.
John Slater, landlord of the Reresby Arms, Denaby, said that prisoner came into his house on Saturday about 12 o’clock, and ordered a quart of beer, and paid 6d. for it. After he had consumed half of it he began using bad language and said the beer was bad. Witness said he did not want any bother with him and gave him the money back. Defendant still continued to swear and was ordered out.
He refused to go, and ordered another quart of beer. After more trouble witness again put the defendant out and then the latter said, “I’ll do six months for you.” He picked up a brick and waited some time outside till witness came up at the window, and then he hurled the brick at him. Fortunately it struck the window sash and smashed it and also damaged two atoms. The damage to the extent of 10s. was caused.
He had seen defendant before some weeks ago; he had come into the house without any provocation whatever and hurled a pint pot at a waiter and then absconded. Defendant said he had only been working at Denaby three days, and was two days without food. The beer had taken effect on him and he was not accountable for his actions at the time.
Defendant was fined 20s. and costs for refusing to quit, and for the wilful damage was fined 6d., 10s. damages and costs.
