A Violent Suitor at Denaby

Charles Mitchell Clarke, of Denaby, was charged with assault and using threatening language to Bridget Clark, his landlady, on the 1st and 6th inst.

The prosecutrix stated that the prisoner had lodged at her house, together with another man. Her husband had been in America three years. The prisoner, when he had been a short time at her house, proposed marriage. She declined, stating that she would not marry for another two years. He pressed her to marry him, and used threats towards her. On Saturday he struck her a blow and again threatened her. He had also damaged her furniture to the extent of £3.

The prisoner was bound over in the sum of £5 to keep the peace, and fined 1s., and ordered to pay the damage and costs, or one month in default.
