Accidents to Young Persons at the Colliery

August 1907

South Yorkshire Times, August 3rd 1907

On July 27th it was reported that M. Flannery, a young pony-driver at Denaby Main Colliery, was terribly injured, being run over by some full corves. It seems that the lad had stumbled whilst walking in front of his pony, and before he could pick himself up the tubs were upon him, and broke his leg in two places.

He was conveyed to the Fullerton Hospital where it was found that his leg was so badly damaged that it had to be amputated.

Great praise is due to Mr. Sol Lawrence, the deputy on the district where the accident occurred. By his prompt action and knowledge of ambulance work, he was the means of saving the lad´s life. When found the lad´s main arteries in the leg were severed and he would have bled to death in ten minutes, but for the prompt action of Mr. Lawrence.

A youth named Alex Hanson, aged seventeen, of St. Anne Terrace, Conisbrough, had his arm broken in two places at Cadeby Main Colliery on July 27th 1907. He is now under the medical care of Dr. Craik, and is progressing favourably.
