Alleged Assault

John Rowlands Adams, coal filler, Conisborough, was charged with assaulting Walter Teague at Conisborough on June 28th.

Walter Teague (complainant) said the assault took place on the road between the station and the New Hotel at Denaby. The defendant, who had been his lodger and whom he had turned out, called him a b – monkey and then he struck him.

The defendant who pleaded guilty, said he had had a great deal of provocation. The complainant had turned his wife out of doors and had struck his children. He himself was not so big as the complainant, and he wanted to know why he did not try and take it out of him instead of the children. As far as he was concerned he should always take his own part.

The Bench remarking that there was no doubt the defendant had had considerable provocation, ordered him to pay the costs, no conviction being recorded
