Alleged Assault at Conisboro’
John William Hewitt, of Denaby (a little boy), was charged with assaulting Emma Taylor (a girl), at Conisboro’, on the 8th inst. The complainant stated that on the day in question, when she was coming home from her work along with her companions, about 5.15 p.m., the defendant commenced to throw stones at them, and called her all sorts of foul names. He said his mother told him to do so. He said she (complainant) was a “bad ’un,” and that her mother kept a lodging. He hit her on the head and shoulder with stones.
George Taylor stated that he saw the boy throw stones at complainant and hit her, and he said their house was the white shop in Denaby. A. Bucknill said she heard the defendant throw stones at her, and use very bad language.
The defendant’s mother said the complainant’s mother always went by the name of “Shaggy Diamond,” everybody knew her almost by that name, of late this girl of hers (defendant’s) had called her Mrs. Taylor “Slippatta;” she did not know what she meant by it. As for Mrs. Hewitt, it was well known that she was a woman of loose fame, and in her opinion the Almighty was very merciful to her.
The defendant was ordered to pay the costs, 20s. and 6d. for the conviction.
