Alleged Assault at Conisborough

George Booth, glassblower, Conisbro’ was summoned at Doncaster Saturday for assaulting Ann Ryan on the 14thult. The complainant said she was talking to defendant’s wife, who was a neighbour. The husband then came out, and after using abusive language seized her by the shoulder and knocked her down: she was unconscious at first.

By Mr Baddiley (for the defence), witness said she was quite sober at the time. She had been to a doctor who advised her go to bed. Her arm was still in sling.

Elizabeth Proudman corroborated, as did Hannah Tingle and Sarah Barker.

For defence Arthur Watkins said complainant made use of offensive language, and then the defendant ordered her away. She attempted to strike him, and he raised his arm and thus caught the blow. The woman then fell.

Harry Wroe, watchman for Messrs- Kilner Bros., having given similar testimony, the case was dismissed.
