Alleged Assault at Conisbro’.

Thos. Chadwick, glassblower, Conisbro’, was brought up, charged with assaulting James Hughes, another glassblower, at that place on the 11th inst.

The complainant stated that on Tuesday last, at 7 a.m., whilst at the works, defendant began to speak disrespectfully of his (complainant’s) mother, and he (complainant), in return, mentioned defendant’s father, when he struck him in the face, and cut his lip through. He afterwards came towards him with a knife in his hand, and threatened that he would cut his bl—dy heart out, if he said two words. Told him he would have to pay for what he had already done, whereupon he struck him again and burst his (complainant’s) nose.

For the defence, Geo. Johnson said he was present when the disturbance took place. Asked Hughes to give him some tobacco, when Hughes said, “Ask that black b—r to give you some.” Hughes shouted again to Chadwick, and accused him of having pined his father and mother to death. Chadwick said, if he said that again, he would upset his “wheelbarrow.” Chadwick then struck complainant, then they both rolled on the ground outside the shop, &c.

Joseph Stead also gave corroborative evidence to the effect that Hughes was to blame, as much or more than Chadwick.

The bench dismissed the case, considering that what complainant had got he had brought it on himself.
