A Cadeby works cashier, who was alleged at Doncaster West Riding Court yesterday (Thursday) to have been responsible for deficiencies of over £3,000, was alleged by Chief Inspector Donald Craig to have told him that he had got into debt through taking bets at work and gambling.
The man, Mr. Herbert Day, aged 39, of Scott Avenue, Conisbrough was sent for trial to the West Riding Quarter Sessions accused of offences involving his employers, the Steetly Dolomite Processing Ltd., of Cadeby — six of stealing a total of £104, three of embezzling a total of £150, 12s., three of obtaining a total of £56 by false pretences, eight of making false entries and one of omitting particulars on a wage sheet.
He reserved his defence and was allowed bail.
Mr. Frank Taylor, prosecuting, alleged that deficiencies in the firm’s holiday savings fund of about £1,400 were caused by Day withdrawing money on the pretence that it was for the employees, and deficiencies of about £1,600 arose from canteen takings which had been handed to Day
Thirdly, he alleged that Day had retained just over £200 of the firm’s money from the sale of scrap metal. The defendant was stated to have worked for the firm since he was 14.
Works Manager, Mr. Gilbert Gresley described him in court as “a hard worker.”
