Alleged Persistent Cruelty.
Conisboro’ Case Adjourned
Michael Jenkinson, dataller, of Conisboro’, was summoned by his wife, Charlotte Jenkinson, for persistent cruelty.
Mr. P. Allen was for the complainant, and Mr. J. A. Baddiley defended.
It was stated that the parties were married on Dec. 25, 1900, and there were three children of the marriage.
Things did not go very happily, and in June of last year a separation agreement was signed, the defendant agreeing to pay his wife 13s. 6d. per week.
The wife went back to him on Aug. 28th, and he behaved very decently for a fortnight, and then started drinking.
Three weeks before Christmas he tried to strangle her, and he threatened her in bed.
Some weeks ago he said he would pay her £1 per week if she would go.
The eldest son had had to be sent to a home on account of the violence of his father.
She had left him on five separate occasions in the past.
The complainant bore out this statement in evidence, and added that the defendant had told her and the family to go to sleep, and he would finish the lot of them.
Cross-examined by Mr. Baddiley, the complainant said the defendant had never struck her.
The question arose as to whether there was any evidence of persistent cruelty, and the case was adjourned for a fortnight, the wife in the meantime to take out a summons for desertion, failing an agreement between the parties.
