Alterations to Conisborough Board Schools

A County Court Claim

Yesterday, at the Doncaster County Court, Mr. Hattersley, solicitor, Mexborough, appeared for Wm. Jones, blacksmith, Conisborough, who sued Geo. Ledger, plumber, for £6 5s. for work done.—Mr. Baddiley defended.—The sum of £2 10s. had been paid into court.

The plaintiff said he was engaged by the defendant to do certain work as alterations at the Conisborough Schools. He had to divide the Boys’ and the Girls’ School. There was no contract as to price, and no plan to work by. The sum of £6 5s. was a fair amount. He had paid out of pocket £2 14s. 6d., and the labour of himself and his assistant was £3 7s.

Cross-examined: There were eight yards of palisading. There was no complaint as to the workmanship.—Harry Skinner, of Sheffield, said the sum charged was reasonable. He should have charged more than the plaintiff.

The defendant contended that £4 10s. would have been a reasonable charge.—His Honour said he should deduct £2 for bad workmanship, and give a verdict for £4 5s., and the costs of one witness.
