Alternative scheme for Denaby

Although Conisbrough Urban Council have been forced to drop a Denaby Main building scheme because of prohibitive costs, they will not abandon the site at Balby Street.
This was decided on Wednesday when the surveyor, Mr. R.M. Clark, was asked to prepare an alternative scheme.

Coun. J. Prendergast said that the committee had made economies in the scheme of 86 maisonettes originally envisaged, which brought the price per unit down from £3,581 to about £3,100. But, fully subsidised, the rents would still have been about £4 5s.

He added: ”The Housing Committee thought this was far too high for people of our district and we propose that no further action be taken on the contractor’s scheme.”

Announcing that the engineer was to prepare an alternative plan for maisonettes at Balby Street, he said this work would be given priority.
He said the purpose was to cover up the arrears in the slum clearance scheme for Denaby Main.
