An Assault at Conisborough

John Buckingham, miner, of Conisborough, was summoned for an assault on Abraham Sudworth, Conisborough, on 7 September.

The complainant stated that the defendant came to his door at half past 10 at night, and wanted him to go out and fight. He told him to go away, but he refused and defendant then struck him three times in the face. He had been under the doctor for a week in consequence of his treatment.

Elizabeth Wright said defendant came and wanted to fight her husband, and because he refused he struck him three times

Joseph Goddard, who witnessed the assault, stated that defendant struck complainant in the face without any provocation. He stood against the door and saw everything that transpired quite plainly.

Defendant denied the charge, said that complainant struck him with a poker.

Elizabeth Clayton said she saw Sudworth hit the defendant with a poker. Defendant did not strike Sudworth at all.

Jane Marshall came forward and said it was her that hit Sudworth on account of him having use some foul language to her.

Complainant: Where did you hit me? – Witness: In the face.

Complainant: It wasn’t you that hit me; it was Buckingham.

The case was dismissed.
