An Assault at Conisborough
William Ackroyd, miner of Conisborough, was charged with assaulting Agnes Gray on the 11th April. It appeared from the evidence of the complainant that on the date named, she was in the highway at New Conisborough, when defendant went up to her and asked what she had been saying about him. She told him she hadn’t said anything about him.
He then called a foul names, and struck her on the face and nearly knocked her down. He then walked away without another word.
Jane Holt was passing at the time, and corroborated the complainant’s evidence.
Defendant admitted the assault, pleaded provocation. He said the complainant had been his housekeeper, but had left it, and had been saying things about him.
Fined 30 shillings, including costs.
