An Echo Of The Denaby Strike
A public-house brawl had its sequel at the Court on Monday. The public house in question was the High House Inn, Piccadilly, Swinton, the complainant in the case being John Smith, of Swinton, and the charged Wm. Dickson, of the same place, with assaulting him on the 24th inst.
Mr. Gichard defended Mr. Smith, and defendant pleaded not guilty.
Mr. Gichard said the client went into the Inn on the date named, about 9-30 p.m. The defendant was sitting on the other side of the room. In about half-an-hour the defendant picked up a jug containing beer, came across the room, and threw it deliberately in his face. Smith at the same time struck sleep that went down.
The Denaby pit during the strike. This was not the first time by many since complainant went to work at Denaby he had been interfered with by the defendant.
John Smith, the complainant, was called, and bore out his counsel’s statement.
Mrs. Beckett, the landlady of the High House Inn, also gave evidence. The complainant came to her and made a statement and she ordered the defendant out, and he went.
The complainant had his coat off, and said he could run the defendant for any other man. He was excited.
The defendant said Smith wanted to strike him, and took off his coat for that purpose.
For putting the beer in such an unseemly place Dickson was ordered to pay a fine of 10s. and costs.
