Another Month

The Conisborough glassblower, John William Davison, on the previous day were sent to prison for a month for assaulting his wife, was charged on remand with leaving his wife and two children chargeable to the Guardians.

Mr W.H. Ayres, the relieving officer, stated that the wife apply for relief on 31 August, and the Guardians made an order of 3s per week. Altogether she had received £1 4s. A warrant for the prisoner’s arrest was taken out on 20 September. There were two children, aged respectively 11 and four years.

The prisoner’s wife gave corroborative evidence. She did not really know what her husband earned, but it would be 30 shillings a week. She had had to sell all the furniture to pay the rent. Before he went the prisoner obliterated two photographs of himself in order that he could not be traced.

Replying to the magistrates, the prisoner said he was now out of work. He was a glassblower, but that was now a thing of the past. It was no use.

It was stated that the prisoner gave up his work voluntary.

He was committed to prison for a month, making two months in all he will have to serve.
