“Times” Help – in Search for Denaby Relatives
A story which appeared in “South Yorkshire Times” two weeks ago seeking relatives in Denaby of an American woman, was answered yesterday when a member of the family walked into our offices.
Two weeks ago Mrs Ivy Singleton Ellis, of Utah USA enlisted our aid in seeking relatives of her grandmother, Mrs Phoebe Webster, who were living at Denaby Main many years ago.
Mrs Ellis said her grandmother exchanged many letters with relatives in this country asking for information that might help her in writing a family history.
Mrs Ellis said one the few with whom Mrs Webster corresponded with was Mr Alvin Webster of Denaby Main.
It was through this name that a reporter was able to establish that 65-year-old Mrs Beatrice Linley, of 119, Doncaster Road, Denaby Main, is related to Mrs Webster. Mrs Linley, who came to our offices with her youngest daughter, Mrs Kathleen Martin, of 19, West Street, Conisbrough, said that Mr Alvin Webster was her father. She said she did not know the Christian names of her grandparents on her father’s side, as she was the youngest child in a family of seven, and her grandparents had died when she was a baby.
Mrs Lindley said she could recall that when she was very young some of her father’s brothers and sisters emigrated to Australia, New Zealand and Florida. She said her father was going to emigrate to and had obtained a passport, but because of a pit strike he was unable to go at the last minute. Mrs Linley, who has lived in Denaby all her life, does not know of anyone in Denaby called Webster who might be related. Meanwhile Mrs Lindley is awaiting news from Mrs Ellis about how the Webster family have been faring.
