Ashurst’s Quick Win
Ellis Ashurst, the Conisboro’ boxer, scored a quick win over Charlie Hazel, of Wales, in what was to have been a ten rounds contest at Belle Vue, Manchester, on Monday.
With the first round only a minute old Ashurst clipped his opponent with a right to the jaw, knocking him over backwards. Hazel fell with his neck against the bottom rope and was so dazed that he was unable to get up to continue.
In the same programme Tommy Moore (Royston), the Northern Middleweight champion, was rather unfortunate to be beaten on a knock-out by Al Burke (London). Burke was the cleverer boxer, but Moore was very strong, and though knocked down half a dozen times, took his punishment without seeming unduly troubled.
But in the eighth round, while on his knees watching the timekeeper, he misunderstood the official and was counted out.
