Assault at Conisbro’

Thos. Shutt, landlord of the Red Lion, Conisbro’, was fined 40s. and 45s. costs for assaulting Arthur Goodlad, labourer, Conisbro’. Complainant is employed by Mr. Nicholson, brewer, Conisbro’, and on the 14th of May he was delivering grains. Defendant’s lad had had one lot and came for another, and because complainant kept him waiting a little defendant commenced to call him names, and after a few words struck Goodlad over the eye, knocking him down and cutting his face, and on complainant getting up again, defendant struck him twice or three times more.

For the defence it was contended that the complainant called defendant a “spoilt child” and other disagreeable names.

Michael Slattery and Thomas Morgan, collier, Denaby, for fighting at Mexbro’, the Saturday night before, were each ordered to pay 12s. 6d. costs.
