Assault at Denaby.

Emma Embleton, married woman, Denaby, summoned Joe Jones, miner, Denaby, for an assault alleged to have been committed on August 21.

There was a cross summons by Jones against Embleton for an assault on the same date.

Mrs. Embleton said that on the day in question defendant came to her house, and after making a complaint about her boy having stolen some thing out of his garden, said “Come outside and have a go at my little one (evidently meaning his wife); she will knock you out in about five minutes.”

She refused to go outside her own home, and defendant struck at her many times and hit her once in the face.

Florence Squires gave corroborative evidence.

Jones said that he had an allotment garden in which he kept fowls, ducks, and pigeons. He had to make several complaints regarding the stealing of his birds.

On Saturday last he went to Mexborough, and when he left all his stock was perfectly all right. When he arrived home, his wife made a complaint to him regarding the stock he kept on the allotments, and, on visiting the allotment, he found that one of his chickens had been stolen. In consequence of a report made to him by his wife he went to Mrs Embleton’s house. He was perfectly sober, and he knocked at the door. Mrs. Embleton came downstairs and open the door. Jones, then made a complaint to her. Mrs. Embleton, who Jones alleged to be drunk, then made use of abusive language. Witness told her that on account of her drunkenness he would report her to the relief committee, and she then said “you rotten pig, I will blind you,” and hit him in the eyes.

Elizabeth Jones gave evidence in support of this, and added that her husband never struck Mrs. Embleton.

Both cases were dismissed.
